NEW! Skin Cancer Screening

SIAScope Camera and Image pf Mole

Access to a dermatologist can be frustrating slow, with average wait times being anywhere from 5 - 12 months. Those long wait times can have a drastic impact on survivability if you are diagnosed with Melanoma skin cancer. The good news is that Advanced Vitality has Brampton's first Rapid Skin Cancer screening service where you will receive a dermatologists report for a concerning mole in less then 72 hours.

How much does this service cost?

$249.99: No dermatologist referral from family doctor

$149.99: MD referral required*

* Paper copy of referral for dermatology consult required

Surface Electromyography

Why should you measure the STRESS in your posture muscles with sEMG?

Dr. Tara preforming a child INSiGHT scan

Surface Electromyography (sEMG) is just a big word for the tool that measures STRESS and pinpoints areas of overactive or exhausted neuro-musculature.

Everyday, people come to our clinic complaining of back pain, neck pain or headaches. When the sEMG scan shows the areas of neural tension they say "ya, that's where I hold all my stress". So ... lets measure it, work on it, and then measure the improvement!

Why is it important for kiddos? When your kid's sEMG scans so show abnormal results, it's an important signal that stress is getting stuck early and can contribute to issues later on. It may also relate to behavioral issues like fidgeting, overactivity, emotional outbursts and clumsiness. Getting your kiddo scanned and on a restorative chiropractic plan BEFORE school starts may be just the ticket for your school success this year!

Man drinking water

FIVE TIPS FOR DRINKING MORE WATER

AND WHY IT'S IMPORTANT FOR FAT LOSS

Our bodies are made of ~70% of water. Drinking enough water is vital for optimal health but not everyone knows how it helps turn fat into fuel!

Here are 5 tips to help get your 2L/day:

  1. Get your water ready the night before.

  2. Have a big glass of water first thing when you get up in the morning.

  3. Set reminders on your phone, either in your calendar or try out an app.

  4. Associate having a drink of water with daily tasks to build up a habit of drinking water.

  5. Flavour your water - use fresh fruits, veggies, or even a tea bag!

Clinic Member Spotlight: Hugh!

Clinic Members Sharon and Hugh

Meet our clinic members Sharon and Hugh!

Hugh has been clinic member at Advanced Vitality since 2014. He began Chiropractic Care with Dr. Tara for relief of neck and back issues from past accidents. He found that gentle chiropractic adjustments helped him feel better. Hugh was later diagnosed with cancer but continued to use chiropractic care throughout his fight. Unfortunately, we lost an amazing human being when Hugh passed away last summer.

Every time Hugh was in for his appointments he was always making our team laugh with his quick wit and clever jokes, even through his hardest times. His wife Sharon is also a clinic member at Advanced Vitality and amazed us with her strength and dedication to supporting Hugh through his illness. These two are the most incredible example of unconditional love and as such, are why we are choosing to highlight them in this months Clinic Member Spotlight!

"He really valued the people of Advanced Vitality. They were so kind and considerate and made him feel normal. He loved people, so any outing was so welcomed. He got to know many of the staff and loved to tell jokes, etc. During his visits, Dr. Tara was so gentle! The last time he was in, I knew it would be his last visit, but he still wanted to book another appointment!"

Humour, that was Hugh's greatest quality. He made people feel at ease by telling jokes, chatting or just listening.

Hugh reading to his three grandchildren

"Hugh was a very kind and compassionate husband, father and grandfather. His grandkids would say 'tell us a joke grandpa!'. They just loved him so much."

Just after Hugh's first surgery in 2018, he was trying to recover. It was in a lot of pain an very uncomfortable. Sharon's sister-in-law in Alberta was relaying to her a story about this pig that came to visit their acreage near Calgary. It was such an unbelievably funny story. Sharon told Hugh to help him get past some of his pain. Well, he decided to make a story out of it!

"He just sat down at the table in the kitchen and started feverishly writing and writing this story. Fast forward to spring 2020, he started asking me if I could figure out how he could get this published.... yikes.... as if I didn't have enough to do trying to look after him. My daughter-in-law Robyn and son James took it on and contacted their friend Tania. Tania's mom is a well known wildlife artist in Brampton, they agreed to do some art work. Robyn did some final editing of the book, layout and sourced a company that would print it.

Hugh with his children's book "That's Not My Pig!"

On the Friday before Father's Day, 30 books arrived on my doorstep. On Saturday, June 20, Tania, along with James, Robyn, Will, Lori and our 3 grandchildren Mia, Madeline and Jack presented it to him as his Father's Day gift.

The look on his face said it all, he was so overwhelmed and happy, it just made all of our day! Since then, we have ordered another 300 books, and sold most of them. The book was even registered with an ISBN ! Hugh was so pleased about all of this."

Hugh lived to serve his community, whether it was his church, friends, neighbours, he loved people and would help anyone he could. During his last 2.5 years of life, he frequently visited Wellspring Chinguacousy, where they had many programs to help cancer patients and their families. His favourite was the exercise program and he enjoyed going and talking to the people there.

To help keep Hugh's legacy alive and to give back to our community, you can Donate to Wellspring Chinguacousy, a very helpful and meaningful charity or participate in one of their fundraisers. You will be enriched, much as we have been by the life of Hugh!

Health Tip of the Month: Sunburn Prevention

Man with a sunburn

After a long and cold winter, many Canadians can't wait for the warmer days of spring/summer to soak up some sun. However, is a "tan" healthy for us? Some believe that sun tanned skin is seen as a sign of health, since it indicates that you have been outdoors a lot.
